Notes from Pastor Rob

Get'er Done!

by Rob Harper, Pastor

Evelyn Underhill, in her book The Spiritual Life, writes, “We are the agents of the Creative Spirit in this world.  Real advance in the spiritual life, then, means accepting this vocation with all it involves.  Not merely turning over the pages of an engineering magazine and enjoying the pictures, but putting on overalls and getting on with the job.”

What is the job we are called to do?  We individually have things we are called to do.  But what is the collective thing we have for our shared vocation and how do we best achieve our goal?  We might discern several answers to these questions, but I think Evelyn Underhill is writing of the advancement in the spiritual life.  We grow in our spiritual life as we become co-creators with God.

Many times we struggle with the balance of doing and being.  In today’s world, it is easy to increase our doing.  It is more difficult to set apart time for being.  However we might have missed doing the most important task of our vocation.  That is what John Wesley wrote about in his Notes on the New Testament which reads, “Loving one another is a never-ending Christian obligation.  It is the essence of Christian ethics and behavior.”

Love of God, neighbor and self is probably the task most neglected in our world today.  So, let’s get’er done.  Let’s become co-creators with God in our relationships as we love one another.

Grace & Peace
