What We Believe

Some Affirmations

Southern Heights UMC is full of all kinds of people finding and following God’s call to Life. These simple affirmations are just one way of describing who we are within the great streams of spirituality God is creating in this world. There is much, much more to Southern Heights than these affirmations. This list is just a starting point. To really discover this congregation, you’re invited to meet the people, soak in the atmosphere, participate in some of the ministries, and discover what so many are discovering: God’s Spirit of Life is active in our world today...

· Diversity of people and faith enriches our community.

· God’s Spirit speaks through many voices.

· We join together in our journey toward experiencing and expressing God’s love.

· God’s original blessing in each of us is “the image of God,” a spark of God’s Spirit and a spiritual connection to God’s creative love and compassion.

· Jesus of Nazareth, the Christ, is our living guide on our journey through life.

· Scripture—understood through tradition, lived in personal experience, and tested by reason—points toward God’s love for us and for the world.

· Among God’s greatest gifts to us is the ability and responsibility to care for creation, to nurture our individual creativity, and to increase God's Spirit of Life in the world.

· Our goal as a Christian community is to welcome all people with respect and love, to grow together in following Jesus in compassion, to know God’s Presence through each other and through creation, and to go into the world to bring the "good news" of God's salvation to the world.
